Boiler Losing Pressure: What It Means and What to Do

A boiler that needs a rare top-up is normal. One that needs topping up every few weeks has water leaving the system somewhere — and that is worth finding, not repeating.
What 'Losing Pressure' Actually Means
Sealed central heating systems are designed to hold pressure within a specific range, usually shown as a coloured band on the pressure gauge. A very gradual drop over months, needing an occasional top-up, is unremarkable — it happens to most systems eventually. Needing to top up every few weeks, or watching the gauge drop noticeably within days, is different: it means water is actively leaving the system, and topping it up again doesn't address why.
The Three Usual Causes
A leak somewhere in the system is the most intuitive cause — sometimes visible as damp or staining near a radiator or pipe joint, sometimes hidden under floors or inside walls with no visible sign at all. A faulty pressure relief valve is another common cause: this safety valve is meant to release water only if pressure gets dangerously high, but a worn or debris-fouled valve can start releasing water at completely normal pressure, often noticeable as a drip from an external discharge pipe. The third cause is a failed expansion vessel — the component that absorbs the natural expansion of heated water — which, when its internal diaphragm fails, can no longer do its job properly and causes erratic pressure behaviour.
Why Repeated Top-Ups Don't Fix It
Topping up pressure treats the symptom, not the cause. The underlying leak or fault typically continues or worsens, and a boiler that keeps dropping below its minimum safe operating pressure will eventually lock out and refuse to fire at all — often at an inconvenient moment. Finding and fixing the actual cause tends to be a one-time job, versus an indefinitely repeating one.
What an Engineer Actually Checks
A proper diagnosis works through the visible system first — pipework, joints, radiator valves — before testing the pressure relief valve's discharge and the expansion vessel's pre-charge with a gauge. This order matters: it rules out the easy-to-spot causes before assuming something more involved.

Yes, a leak under floorboards or inside a wall can be completely invisible day to day while still draining the system. If nothing is visibly wet, the pressure relief valve and expansion vessel become the more likely causes and are both testable by an engineer.
