How 227 fits with the EA code
On many Worcester Bosch Greenstar boilers the display shows EA together with 227. EA is the lockout; 227 is the cause code, and it means the boiler tried to light but no flame was detected. It's an ignition fault, so the boiler has shut off the gas and will stay off until it's reset.
Common causes include the gas supply not reaching the boiler, a frozen or blocked condensate pipe in cold weather, a worn or dirty ignition electrode, a flame detection problem, a gas valve that isn't opening, and occasionally a flue or circuit board fault.
What you can check yourself
Make sure other gas appliances work and, if you have a prepayment meter, that it has credit. Check the gas isolation valve under the boiler (usually a small lever) is in line with the pipe, which means it's open. In freezing weather, check the plastic condensate pipe outside; if it's frozen, thaw it with warm (not boiling) water or a warm cloth.
After those checks, reset the boiler once using the reset button, as described in the user manual. If 227 comes back, leave it locked out. Repeatedly resetting an ignition fault doesn't clear the cause.
What an engineer checks
A Gas Safe registered engineer will measure the gas pressure at the boiler, watch an ignition attempt and test the electrode, the flame sensing circuit and the gas valve. That tells them which part of the sequence is failing, so you pay for the part that is actually faulty rather than a guess.
